Fayat scholarship for studies at international top universities

The Flemish government offers prestigious scholarships, named after Hendrik Fayat, for studying at international top universities in 2022-2023. The scholarships are open to master students from Flemish universities, with excellent study results who want to study in high qualitative academic disciplines. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of competitive selection.

The scholarship program enables study at international top universities worldwide for talented Flemish students who pursue excellence, have leadership potential and a sense of social responsibility; who are eager to strengthen the image of Flanders abroad and want to be part of an international network of talented Flemish students and alumni in various fields.


The scholarship covers expenses for studies, housing, living and transportation, during the study period of maximum 24 months.

Students with disabilities receive an extra allowance based on proved  additional costs related to their disability.


  • Holder of the Belgian nationality
  • Very good command of the English language (TOEFL iBT 100/120 of IELTS 7,5/9)
  • Outstanding knowledge of the Dutch language (min. level C - CEFR)
  • Master degree from a Flemish Higher Education institution, to be obtained in the year of the grant award (or obtained at the latest 3 years before the grant application)
  • Excellent academic records (great distinction or multiple distinction) and/or other personal merits and leadership qualities
  • Obtaining admission into a highly qualified study program in an international top university
  • Combination with other scholarships is not allowed

Application procedure

Deadline: you can apply from 14 February until 3 April (23.59 o’clock CET)

The application has to be done digitally and should contain the following documents

  • Copy of your master’s degree (if already obtained)
  • transcript of academic records
  • 2 letters of recommendation from experts in the field of knowledge, whereas one from a professor where you completed your master’s degree
  • A motivation letter
  • An essay demonstrating your leadership potential and sense of social responsibility
  • A statement that the Dutch language is your mother tongue or proof of language knowledge of the Dutch language, level C, for speaking and writing (if Dutch is not your mother tongue)
  • Proof of admission into a highly qualified study program in an international top university (if already available)
  • A statement you are not receiving any other grant for this study program

Selection procedure

An independent jury, composed by the Flemish government, will the eligibility of the applications and evaluates the anonymized applications. In the week of 2 May ’22 you will receive an email with the result of the evaluation.

Selected candidates are then invited for an individual selection interview. The jury consists of five captains of society with diverse backgrounds (exact sciences, humanities, audiovisual and visual arts, music and performing arts).

During the interview, the following will be assessed:

  • Your motivation
  • Your communication skills, ambassadorial qualities and leadership potential
  • The way in which you want to develop an international network of talented students and alumni in different fields in the host country
  • The way in which you want to strengthen the image of Flanders abroad by the forementioned network
  • The way in which, after your studies, you will disseminate the acquired knowledge and experiences for the benefit of the Flemish Community

If you are interested in applying for the Fayat grants you should contact the UGent contact person as soon as possible for further information and support.

Applying to a foreign university can take a couple of months. It is therefore best not to postpone your application for admission to the foreign university(s); keep the application deadlines in mind. If you already have a current application for study in 2022-2023 at one of the eligible universities can also compete for the grant. Please note that the Fayat grant cannot be combined with other grants.
