Mobility from Russia to Belgium

Are you a BA or MA student looking for an exchange of 1 or 2 semesters at Ghent University?

Only students from Russian universities who concluded a bilateral agreement with UGent, can come as an exchange student. You can check the list of our Russian partner universities.

Overview of funding:

  • Funding from your home university: you can ask your International Office whether funding is available for mobility to Ghent. Especially universities who are a member of the top 5 100 project can have budget for this.
  • Funding from EU: Ghent University can apply for some extra scholarship via Erasmus + credit mobility. This is only applicable to a limited number of Russian partner universities. Your international office will know whether this is the case.

Overview of funding:

  • The Russian government: Global Education Program
  • The Flemish government: the Master Mind Programme offers a limited number of grants for international Master degree students. Please note that it is Ghent University which selects the potential candidates for these grants, which is to be validated by the Flemish government
  • Flemish government: FWO PhD fellowships, for holders of a diploma at least equivalent to a master's degree following a bachelor's degree and awarded by the competent institutions in one of the countries of the European Economic Area or Switzerland. You can have your certificate, awarded outside EEA and Switzerland, recognized by NARIC, as being equivalent to a specific Flemish master degree.
  • The Flemish organisation VLAIO offers Baekeland Mandates for PhD research in close collaboration with industry
  • VIB, a life sciences research institute in Flanders, offers grants for international life sciences PhD students
  • Ghent University has several Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees who offer scholarships
  • Ghent University offers a limited number of PhD scholarships via the Special Research Fund, linked to an FWO application

Check with your international office whether there is funding for a joint PhD, possibly via the top 5 100 project.

The Russian Ministry of Education and Science funds each year Russian Presidential Scholarships.

Ghent University encourages Joint PhD degrees but does not offer specific financial incentives for joint PhD’s. With permission of your Ghent university supervisor it is possible to do a joint PhD within the scope of any regular PhD scholarship/funding.

Are you a BA or MA student looking for an exchange of 1 or 2 semesters at a Russian partner university?

UGent students can only go on exchange mobility to universities with whom we concluded a bilateral agreement. You can check the list of our Russian partner universities, but you should verify with your faculty committee of internationalisation

Overview of funding:

  • Funding via Ghent University: there are several possibilities for exchange scholarships. You should apply to the annual call and apply for a scholarship. The International Office will then inform you which scholarship you have obtained (can be UGent funding, Flemish or EU funding)
  • Funding from Russia: some partner universities offer extra’s to incoming students (e.g. reduction for housing, small living cost). You can ask your host university whether they offer any benefits

Are you a BA or MA student looking for short-term mobility?

You can consider to attend a winter or summer school in Russia, at one of our partner universities. If you have the support of your programme, you can apply for an incentive of the Russia Platform (50 % of the registration fee, max. 150 €). Internships in Russia are eligible as well. You can contact to obtain more information. You can only apply for 1 incentive per year.

Funding for projects

EU funding:

  • Erasmus +
    • Capacity Building in Higher Education: projects focusing on curriculum development, modernisation of governance and/or strengthening relations between HE and the wider socio-economic environment
    • Jean Monnet: Jean Monnet Activities are designed to promote excellence in teaching and research in the field of European Union studies worldwide.  
  • Horizon 2020: To support Russian participation in Horizon 2020 actions and in view of the fact that participants from Russia are no longer automatically funded by the EU, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation publishes dedicated calls to offer funding support for Russian Horizon 2020 participants in accordance with its own call procedures
  • EuropeAid: a search engine is available to look for grants specifically for Russia
  • ERA. Net RUS Plus: calls for Science & Technology projects or for Innovation projects

Russian funding:

  • Russian Foundation for Basic Research: competitions for projects of joint fundamental research by Russian and foreign scientists. Scientific directions supported by the Foundation are: mathematics, mechanics, and information technology, physics and astronomy, chemistry and studies of materials, biology and medical science, earth science, humanities and social sciences, information technology and computer systems, fundamental basics of engineering sciences. Calls for projects (RU only) 
  • Foundation for Assistance to Small Innovative Enterprises: innovation projects
  • Russian Science Foundation: larger research projects
  • Russian Foundation for the Humanities (RU only): The Fund holds several dozen of different calls in all major areas of the human sciences: history, archeology, ethnography, economics, philosophy, sociology, political science, law, science of science, philology, art history, psychology, problems of a comprehensive study of human psychology and pedagogy.
  • Mega Grants: attraction of leading scientists to Russia
  • Foundation for Assistance to Small Innovative Enterprises (RU only): innovation projects
