Maxine De Wulf Helskens is a Ph.D. student (FWO) at Ghent University and is associated with both the Center for Journalism Studies (CJS) as the Centre for Cinema and Media Studies (CIMS). She graduated in 2020 with a master’s degree in communication sciences specialized in journalism. In 2021, Maxine obtained a second master’s degree in written and online media journalism at the Free University of Brussels.
Inspired by her study abroad in Washington D.C. during which she was enrolled in a course about journalism ethics in the movies and her first master’s dissertation that investigated gendered representations of female superheroes in series, she opted to combine both topics in her second master’s dissertation. More specifically, she researched how Flemish audiences make sense of representations of journalism in fiction considering an intersectional perspective. She now continues this research as a Ph.D. student at the faculty of Communication Sciences under the supervision of Prof. dr. Sarah Van Leuven and Prof. dr. Frederik Dhaenens.
