11h00 - Opening by Vice-Rector Mieke Van Herreweghe and Director Internationalisation Guido Van Huylenbroeck

11h15 -  Plenary speaker Prof. Doris Schroeder, Director of Centre for Professional Ethics, UCLan (UK) as lead author of the “Global Code of Conduct for Research in Resource-Poor Settings”. Co-presenting with short online clips will be Dr. Michael Makanga, a co-author of the code and the Executive Director of the EDCTP; Dorian Karatzas, the Head of Sector for Ethics and Research Integrity at the European Commission and Leana Snyders, Director of the South African San Council.

The Global Code of Conduct for Research in Resource-Poor Settings and its sister code, the San Code of Research Ethics are a resource for all research stakeholders who want to ensure that research involving partners from higher and lower income countries is carried out equitably and without ‘ethics dumping’, the export of unethical practices from high income to lower income regions. She will focus in her talk on the importance of long-term relationship building versus helicopter research and on her hope that unfair research practices will become more and more unacceptable the more researchers learn about the many forms of ethics dumping.

• Workshop 1: Ghent University’s instruments for strategic international collaboration

This panel session focusses on the 3 instruments for strategic international cooperation of Ghent University: Regional Platforms, International Thematic Networks (ITN) and Strategic Institutional Partnerships (SIP). During the session the pro’s and con’s of these 3 instruments will be discussed with coordinators of SIPs and ITN’s and members of Regional Platform Steering Committees, thus providing the audience with first-hand experiences, good practices and do’s and don’ts.

• Workshop 2: How do I get more internal connections, how do I involve other faculties, Universities of applied sciences or NGO’s in my project

For this workshop we partnered up with our own department on communication and Levuur.be in order to give you hands-on guidelines on how to raise participation and visibility in regard to projects, partnerships and networks. You will get an insight on how to increase involvement within and with non-profit organizations. Learn to become a real game changer!

• Workshop 3 : Research ethics and ethics dumping policy at Ghent University: from benefit-sharing to human rights

This workshop aims at briefly introducing the policy on research ethics and ethics dumping at Ghent University. We explain some ethical difficulties related to the use of resources or data from the Global South, and ethically sensitive collaborations. We include case studies on the use of natural resources, the possibly negative impact of projects on human rights, and collaborations with entities which might be involved in human rights violations or might be located in conflict regions.

• Workshop 4: Funding for Partnerships Global South

Think outside the boxes of education/research and North/South and learn about both usual and unusual suspects in looking for funding. This session wants to show examples of the not so commonly used donors/financers and brainstorm on how ad hoc opportunities can be more structurally embedded.

• Workshop 5: International Master programmes integrating global (South) perspectives and students at UGent (ICP Connect, EM, …)

This session will give information on the concept of VLIR-UOS ICP international courses and give information on an upcoming call for these VLIR-UOS ICP programs (including scholarships for students from the Global South). A second part will be devoted to how to combine different financing channels such as this ICP with the Erasmus Mundus funding to close with a brainstorm on the balance of North/South issues within these International Master programmes.
