How can the knowledge on how the immune system acts against parasitic worms be used for treating allergic asthma?

Parasitic helminths are adept at modulating the host immune response, to allow their persistence in the host in the face of parasite-toxic type 2 immune responses. We are interested in how the parasite modulates the host immune response, and how we could use this knowledge to design new treatments for allergic diseases such as asthma. We discovered 2 families of proteins secreted by the murine intestinal nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus – HpARI (which acts on IL-33) and HpBARI (which acts on the IL-33 receptor). The parasite produces several homologues of both HpARI and HpBARI, and our recent data shows that these homologous proteins can have very different effects on mouse and human IL-33 responses: sometimes blocking, and sometimes enhancing IL-33 responses in parasitic infections and models of allergic asthma.
