PhD - Ilya T'Jollyn - Assessment of Nucleate Pool Boiling Heat Transfer and Critical Heat Flux for Power Electronics Cooling with a Low-GWP Refrigerant

Electrification of the transport and industrial sector is a key contributor in reducing CO2 emissions. To enable further electrification, electric powertrains (consisting of an electric motor, power electronics and battery) must become cheaper and more compact without loss of power. One of the bottlenecks here is the cooling, which must ensure that the components do not overheat.


In this PhD, two-phase cooling was investigated, where the coolant evaporates when heat is transferred to it. Due to the boiling process in the coolant, more effective heat transfer is obtained compared to single-phase liquid cooling. Heat transfer was measured experimentally for the refrigerant FK-649, a relatively new refrigerant with a low global warming potential. The results prove that two-phase cooling with FK-649 is feasible, but that it is not yet an improvement over current state-of-the-art cooling methods. A model study shows that alternative refrigerants operating at higher pressures have even more potential for cooling than FK-649.
