Conference skills: Academic posters (=module)

Content information

Starting level:
Advanced knowledge of English. By the second session, the students bring an academic poster to use as course and evaluation material.

The participants learn how to structure, finetune and present their academic poster.

This module starts by analyzing the poster medium and simulating how to properly construct it by pinpointing a main message and storyboarding a structure.

A host of authentic examples from various fields are used to focus on important aspects such as clear structure & order of information, appealing layout & title, adapted text & visuals. These examples are extensively discussed to draw up practical guidelines and to find out how participants can implement these within their research topic.

During the second session, the participants will bring one of their own posters to present its content to and discuss its design with their colleagues. Tips will be shared on how to improve the poster and properly present it at conferences.

Placement test: No

Evaluation and testing: The students give a short presentation about a poster which they have designed themselves.
The course may count toward doctoral schooling (1 credit).
