Research interests
- Discovery of novel disease genes, variants and pathways implicated in rare inherited neurological disorders (RNDs) including movement disorders, ataxia, spastic paraplegia, leukodystrophies and dementia
- Increase diagnostic accuracy and speed for undiagnosed RND patients in collaboration with the Neurogenetics Clinic in the Center for Medical Genetics Ghent and the Program for Undiagnosed Rare Disorders (PrOZA)
- Functional modeling of novel variants and genes by combining molecular, clinical, single cell and multi-omics approaches and the use of Drosophila, zebrafish and human iPSC-derived neuronal cultures

More information about Prof. Bart Dermaut
- Prof. Bart Dermaut is clinical geneticist and principal investigator of the Neurogenetics Lab of the Center for Medical Genetics Ghent
- Prof. Bart Dermaut is promotor of the Ghent University Fund for Alzheimer and Degenerative Brain Diseases. The fund now launches a call for for proof-of-concept project grants for young postdoctoral researchers to initiate creative, potentially innovative and multidisciplinary research projects related to neurodegenerative disorders.
