Internationalisation@Home

Prof. Marcel L. Bouvy (1966) obtained his PharmD at Groningen University in 1992 and his PhD at Utrecht University in 2002. In 2009 he was appointed as professor of pharmaceutical care at the department of Pharmacoepidemiology and Clinical Pharmacology at Utrecht university. In this function he is chair of the Utrecht Pharmacy Panel for Education and Research (UPPER), which coordinates all internships and pharmacy practice research. Moreover, Marcel Bouvy has been an active community pharmacist since 1992 and works at SIR institute for Pharmacy Practice and Policy in Leiden which closely cooperates with Utrecht University. Since 2016 he is a member of the Dutch Medicines Evaluation Board.
Marcel Bouvy’s research activities focus on patient adherence, medication safety and include both observational work and evaluation of innovative pharmacy interventions. Marcel Bouvy is (co)author of more than 150 papers in peer reviewed international journals and also publishes frequently in national pharmacy and medical journals. Moreover he has written several professional and consumer oriented books and book chapters on medicines.

Pharmacogenetics: do YOU have your DNA passport?
The 'DNA-passport for medication' to enhance the use of pharmacogenetic information in daily practice for personalizing drug therapy.
Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are responsible for 5-7% of hospitalizations each year. Interindividual variation in drug metabolism is contributing to this problem. DNA analysis of drug metabolizing enzymes, such as cytochrome P450 2D6 enzyme (CYP2D6), can predict the drugs metabolizing capacity of each individual. Ron Van Schaik will discuss the use of the 'DNA-passport for medication', a genetic profile of drug metabolizing enzymes of the cytochrome P450 system, so that drug therapy can be adjusted to this personal DNA profile. This approach will decrease adverse drug reactions to improve effectivity of therapy. The question you thus have to ask yourselves: “Do YOU already have your DNA-passport?

Precision medicine in respiratory disease: are we beyond fiction?
Precision Medicine will help to optimize therapy for the individual patient. After an introduction into the field of precision medicine, the focus will be on research in respiratory disease. Examples from pharmacogenetic and breathomics studies, where results might be on their way to be implemented in clinical practice.
