The role of inositol requiring enzyme-1 (IRE1) in dendritic cell maturation is discussed by Prof. Sophie Janssens (UGent-VIB)

How does our immune system coordinate the balance between immunity and tolerance? How does it distinguish self from non-self antigens? It is well known that dendritic cells (DCs), short-lived immune cells that capture antigens in the periphery and present it to naïve T cells in the lymph nodes, play a decisive role in this process. Depending on how they perceive the antigen, they mature in an immunogenic or tolerogenic manner, inducing immunity or tolerance respectively. While immunogenic DC maturation programs are well established and known to depend strictly on Toll-like receptor triggering, much less is known on how DCs mature in homeostatic conditions.

Our investigations on the role of inositol requiring enzyme-1 (IRE1) in DC biology made us revise what we actually do understand and do not understand of DC maturation. The talk can be attended live or online (Meeting ID: 852 8990 4259 Passcode: 596531)
