Research methods in corporate finance - F000691

Specific course requirements

All classes for this course are scheduled in an intensive six-week time frame, from week 1 until week 7 in the first semester. The first lecture is on Friday 27th September at 9 AM and is obligatory. Register on Ufora in the week before the start of the semester, i.e. September 23, 2019.
In order to be allowed access to this course, you also have to succeed for an oral pre-test which tests your basic knowledge of corporate finance and statistics.  The oral exam is scheduled on Friday, September 27th at 2PM.  Location: Sint-Pietersplein 7, Department of Accountancy & Corporate Finance, 2nd floor, 9000 Gent.

Since active participation is required, this implies the following:

  • Register on Ufora in the week before the start of the academic year, i.e. September 23, 2019. If you fail to do so, you will not be assigned to a group for assignments or even pass this course.
  • Be present and actively participate in the lectures and tutorials: presence in the first lecture (27 Sept. 9am) is obligatory otherwise your access to this course will be denied.  Also indicate your name to the instructor of the course during the first lecture, so he knows you want to take part in the exam.
  • Regularly check the announcements on Ufora.

The course “Research methods in corporate finance” is conceived rather differently from traditional courses:

  • Active participation by all students is required and all students are expected to work on different assignments, including reviewing working papers and conducting their own research projects.
  • The course comprises traditional lectures, tutorials and supervisions.
  1. the traditional lectures will give you the basic theoretical knowledge.
  2. the tutorials will enable you to develop skills required to analyze and evaluate complex research projects. Therefore, the students are expected to review working papers and conduct their own research project.
  3. supervisions will improve your social and communicative skills.

You are required to be present during lectures, tutorials, supervisions and case discussions: If you are absent without a valid reason, you cannot pass this course.  Please notify (in advance!) the discussion leader, the lecturer and the pedagogic teaching staff of your absence. This is a very important attitude that is taken serious in this academic world as well as in the corporate culture.
