A more economical light source so photonic chips consume less energy

(24-02-2022) In his PhD, Jeroen Goyvaerts investigated how a more economical light source could drive photonic chips for longer and thus consume less battery.

“For my PhD research I have worked on optical biosensors on photonic integrated circuits (PICs). These PICs manipulate light, similar to the manipulation of electrical current in electronic integrated circuits, and they are being used in countless applications”, Jeroen explains.

“The target of my research was the integration of a more power-efficient light source for these on-chip biosensors, and doing so with a specific integration technique. With these power-efficient light sources, the sensor can measure for a far longer time on a given battery size”, Jeroen continues.

“Also, the integration technique allows for a more cost-effective scaling towards high-volume production of these chips. This in turn lowers the hurdle for the industry to take over on this technology”

“While I graduate now, this was not a one-man job, but rather executed within a larger team and European project called “Pix4life”. I was able to call upon a large international team within our own Photonics group at Ghent University, but also within our imec-Leuven partnership and most importantly together with our partners of the “Opto-electronic” group of Chalmers University of Technology in Goteborg Sweden. Together we have worked towards obtaining our results and have jointly published them in several open-access journals. And now the future will tell us whether the photonics and sensing-industry will pick up on this body of work”, Jeroen concludes.

Jeroen Goyvaerts has studied at the Catholic University of Leuven for his higher education. He obtained his bachelors in "Electronics Engineering" & "Material Science" in 2013. In 2015, he graduated from Leuven with his master's degree in "Nanoscience and Nanotechnology", offered in a joint program with imec. Afterwards, and prior to the start of the PhD in Ghent, he participated in a 1 year masters in "Photonics Engineering" at the University Polytechnica de Catalunya.

In late 2016, he  joined the Photonics Research Group of Ghent University as a PhD candidate in the H2020 pix4life project. During this time, his work has focussed on the integration of opto-electronic components by means of micro-transfer-printing. During his PhD, he has published 3 first author or first co-author publications in international journals and has been co-author in three more article publications and eleven international conference publications.
