The Disappointed Tourist - 40° 71’ N 73° 96’ E

Places we love disappear. Places we have hoped to visit cease to exist. The forces of war, time, ideology, greed and natural disaster are constantly remaking places that we love but cannot control or save. ‘The Disappointed Tourist’ is inspired by the urge to repair what has been broken. It makes symbolic restitution, literally remaking lost sites through painting them, at the same time that it acknowledges the inadequacy of such restitution. (

Ellen Harvey is an artist. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her paintings, multi-media installations, and large-scale commissions challenge the way we look at traditional iconography and call attention to the personal, social, and physical conditions under which we understand and view images, and to diverse but related issues such as the political meaning of ornament, the ecological implications of the picturesque and the relationship between art and nostalgia.
