Visit of Ghent University to Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), Chinese Academy of Sciences, 24 - 27 May 2016

Visit of UGent to XIEG, May 2016From 24 until 27 May 2016, a delegation from Ghent University visited the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in China. The main goal of the visit was to sign a Joint Lab agreement between the two institutions.

The agreement for the “Sino-Belgian Joint Laboratory for Geo-information” was signed in the presence of H.E. Michel Malherbe, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to China and two other representatives from the Belgian Embassy; the Director General of XIEG, Prof. Chen Xi and several officials from different governmental departments in Urumqi, such as the Xinjiang Bureau of Foreign Experts, the Xinjiang Foreign Affairs Office and the Xinjiang Department of Science and Technology.  
At the end of the official signing ceremony a plaque of the Joint Lab was revealed.

Furthermore, a diploma was rewarded to the first double PhD degree student, Dr. Fang Gonghuan, who successfully defended her doctoral thesis on Sunday 22 May in front of a jury consisting of Belgian and Chinese professors from the relevant domain.

The delegation from Ghent University also accompanied the delegation from the Belgian Embassy headed by Ambassador Michel Malherbe to the meeting with the local leaders of Xinjiang. During this meeting the Ambassador of Belgium discussed several topics, amongst which the longlasting bilateral cooperation between Belgium and China, the signing of the Joint Lab agreement and some possibilities of future cooperation between Belgium and the Xinjiang province.

The establishment of this Joint Lab is a direct outcome of the close cooperation between Prof. Philippe De Maeyer, Department of Geography, Faculty of Sciences, UGent and Prof. Alishir Kurban, Associate professor from the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in China.

This signing will definitely further strengthen the already existing cooperation between Ghent University and the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of Chinese Academy of Sciences in China.

Signing of a cooperation agreement with Hebei University - 22 April 2016

Signing cooperation agreement with Hebei UniversityOn Friday 22 April, Hebei University (HBU) brought a visit to Ghent University to officially sign a cooperation agreement.

Hebei University is de provincial university of the Hebei Province, which has a sister agreement in place with the Province of East-Flanders. The university has an excellent research center about the Song dynasty, a dynasty that was important for the development of the Chan (Zen) Buddhism, which is also the research focus of the Ghent Centre for Buddhist Studies of the Department of Eastern Languages and Cultures (Faculty of Arts and Philosophy) at Ghent University.

This agreement between Ghent University and Hebei University is also of strategic importance for the Province of East-Flanders, as external partner of the China Platform of Ghent University. The Province of East-Flanders, each year, finances a number of exchanges with higher education institutions (also from China) from their budget for scientific research.  

The delegation from Hebei University was headed by Prof. Wang Hongrui, Party Secretary of Hebei University Committee. He was accompanied by Dr. Li Xiaoliu, Director of International Office.

Next to the signing of the cooperation agreement for student and staff exchange between HBU and the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of Ghent University (Department of Eastern Languages and Cultures), other possibilities for cooperation such as Joint PhD, were also part of the discussion during the meeting.

Offical visit of the H.E. Qu Xing, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Kingdom of Belgium – 6 April 2016

On Wednesday 6 April, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Kingdom of Belgium, H.E. Qu Xing, visited Ghent University on the invitation of Prof. dr. Anne De Paepe, Rector of Ghent University.

The Ambassador’s delegation consisted of the following members:
•    Mr. Xiao Han, Counselor for Politics
•    Mr. Shen Long, Counselor for Science and Technology
•    Mr. Tao Hongjian, Counselor for Education
•    Mr. Su Yantao, Second Secretary, Education Section
•    Mr. Ma Kai, Third Secretary, Education Section

During his visit to UGent, the Ambassador also had a meeting with 26 Chinese students and researchers, currently studying and/or conducting research at UGent. During this session the Chinese students and researchers had the chance to discuss several matters regarding their study abroad period and life in Ghent/Belgium with the Ambassador and his delegation.

After this meeting the Ambassador was invited for a guided tour to the old library in Het Pand, where , especially for the occasion of this visit, the old World Map of Sambiasi was on exhibit.

The visit was officially concluded by a meeting with Prof. dr. Annne De Paepe, Rector of Ghent University, Prof. dr. Guido Van Huylenbroeck, Academic Director for Internationalisation and several professors from UGent. During this closing meeting, the professors were offered the chance to elaborate on their activities with China and discuss some new opportunities for cooperation with China.

Ghent University already has a long and close cooperation with the Embassy of China in Brussels and we are convinced that this visit will further strengthen the relationship of Ghent University with the Chinese Embassy.

Visit of XIEG and UCAS to Ghent Universtiy

Visit of Xieg and UCAS to Ghent UniversityFrom 15 until 17 February 2016, Ghent University had the honor of welcoming a delegation from the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of Chinese Academy of Sciences in China and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). The 3-day visit to Ghent University consisted of a Workshop in Het Pand on 15 and 16 February and an official Welcome programme hosted by Prof. Guido Van Huylenbroeck, Academic Director for Internationalisation, on 17 February. The 2-day workshop was organised by the Prof. Philippe De Maeyer, Department of Geography, Faculty of Sciences in cooperation with Prof. Alishir Kurban from the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of Chinese Academy of Sciences in China.

On Tuesday evening 16 February, the delegation also attended the Chinese New Year Event of the Belgian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (BCECC) in the Egmont Palace in Brussels, where they met H.E. Mr. Qu Xing, Ambassador of P.R. China to Belgium.

This visit will definitely further strengthen the already existing cooperation between Ghent University and the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of Chinese Academy of Sciences in China might lead to the set-up of a Joint Lab. Furthermore, it has strengthened the relationship with the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS).

2015 Ghent University Alumni Event, Shanghai

UGent Alumni event ShanghaiThe “Ghent University Alumni Network – China Chapter” hosted its “2015 Event” in the Shanghai IPO Club on December 19th, 2015. The representative of Ghent University and the Province of East Flanders, Mr. Chi Zhang, delivered the opening speech to welcome everyone and gave an overview of the UGent activities in China in 2015.
The rest of the event consisted of speeches/presentations by several alumni now active in the private sector in China.

Summary of the event.

The UGent Alumni Network in China warmly invites and encourages UGent alumni, who are not yet a member, to join this group in order to expand their community and increase their popularity.

Harbin Snow contest

Harbin Snow Contest 2016In the beginning of January 2016, a team from the Magnel Laboratory for Concrete Research was invited by Harbin Engineering University (HEU) in Harbin, China, to participate in the “International Collegiate Snow Sculpture Contest”. The following four enthusiastic MSc students in Construction Engineering were selected: Sebastian Ablorh, Thomas Linthout, Sander Franco and Tim Van Mullem.

They were accompanied by two postdoctoral researchers, dr. ir.-arch. Philip Van den Heede and dr. ir. Didier Snoeck, who were invited to give lectures at a seminar organized at the School of Civil Engineering of HEU. This allowed them to further strengthen the relationship with HEU and the establishment of a research cooperation, which is currently in process.

Despite the fact that it was the team’s first participation in this competition, they were awarded a Recognition Award. Furthermore the team was interviewed by ChinaNews.

Cooperation Agreement with Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), Harbin Campus


On 3 December a delegation from Harbin Institute of Technology Campus Harbin, headed by Prof. Zhang Qianfan, visited Ghent University. In the morning they were welcomed by Prof. Luc Taerwe and some of his colleagues from the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at the Technology Park in Zwijnaarde.
At noon, the signing of a cooperation agreement took place in the Congress Centre “Het Pand”. The goal of this agreement is to start up an immediate cooperation between the Harbin Institute of Technology Campus Harbin and the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Ghent University, also with view on the next call for CSC scholarships.

Official visit of Rector Anne De Paepe to Taiwan


At the invitation of the Taiwanese government, Rector Anne De Paepe visited Taiwan from 3 until 7 November together with a delegation of professors from different faculties of Ghent University.

The delegation from Ghent University visited six institutes. With one of these institutes Ghent University already had a cooperation in the past (Academia Sinica) and with others UGent has established a close cooperation in the past few years, either on educational level or on research: National Chengchi University, National Sun Yat Sen University, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology and National Taiwan University.

During their visit to the above-mentioned institutions the delegation came to a mutual agreement that the necessary steps would be taken to further consolidate and intensify the existing ties.
The official visit of the Rector also offered an opportunity for the signing of one agreement:
•    Cooperation agreement (CA) with The Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts (DILA) – Christoph Anderl (Faculty of Arts and Philosophy)

Furthermore, the parties involved from both sides agreed that following this visit, some existing cooperation projects will be extended and a few new agreements will be signed, e.g. an agreement with Academia Sinica, the biggest and most renowned research institute in Taiwan, is in the process of being signed.
As a result of this mission, and given the significant number of cooperation opportunities with several Taiwanese institutes, Ghent University will organize a Matchmaking Event in the spring of 2016, during which partner institutions from Taiwan will be invited for faculty visits and bilateral meetings with colleagues from Ghent University.

Cooperation Agreement with Dalian University of Technology (DUT)


On 15 October 2015, Ghent University had the honour of welcoming a delegation from Dalian University of Technology (DUT) headed by Prof. Wei Xiaopeng, Chairman of the University Council. During this visit the signing of an extension of the cooperation agreement took place in the presence of Prof. Freddy Mortier.

This will allow the faculty of Engineering and Architecture to further strengthen its existing cooperation with DUT.


Cooperation Agreement with Hebei Medical University

On April 29 and 30 a delegation of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Ghent University led by Dean Prof. Guy Vanderstraeten visited Hebei Medical University in China. During a meeting with Rector Cui Huixian, a Cooperation Agreement was signed. Both parties agreed upon the first Joint PhD.

The dean visited several hospitals in Shijiazhuang, with which the Faculty of Medicine cooperates intensively.
