Description

The future of Turkey after the 16 April referendum: Consequences for the political system and politics

The recent referendum proposing amendments to the Turkish constitution caused much polarisation and debates in and outside Turkey. Especially in Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium discussions were fierce, resulting in diplomatic crises. However, these discussions were more about the campaigns and actors involved then the content of the referendum.

The Pyrrhic victory of the AKP-MHP camp resulted in euphoria for some and despair for others. Yet, the discussion on the validity and legitimacy of the results is not over yet. The long-term consequences will become clearer after 2019. Our roundtable will address the major issues related to the referendum and its consequences for the Turkish political system and politics.

We cordially invite you to our roundtable discussion where experts will discuss the results and consequences of the Turkish referendum from different angles.

The panel will include Belgin San-Akca (Koç University), Bill Park (King’s College London) and Dries Lesage (Ghent University).

The Roundtable will take place at the Faculty for Political and Social Sciences, Korte Meer 11, First floor.

Organization: Ghent Institute for International Studies (GIIS), Ghent University
